In any building, barn or warehouse, the structural engineering of the roof is integral. Every roof needs a framework that will support the loads applied – without it there is nothing for the roofing sheets or roof tiles to rest on which could result in deflection. This is what makes purlins such an important part of every roof structure.
WHAT ARE PURLINS?
Purlins are beams that can be used to create a building framework to support the weight of roofing sheets or wall cladding sheets attached. Some roof purlins are made of wood, however, galvanized steel purlins offer additional benefits including durability, cost and structural length.
At Dependable Steel we manufacture a combination of C purlins and Z purlins. When combined, our galvanized steel purlins provide a complete structural solution ready for roofing and side cladding.
C SECTION PURLINS are designed to form the walls and floor joists of a building shell structure, making them ideal for supporting beams needed for mezzanine flooring.
Z PURLINS are horizontal beams that are designed to form the roof and wall joists of a buildings shell structure. By sitting between the roofing sheets and the building, they act as a support for the sheet to ensure it is firmly attached and secured safely in position.
THE BENEFITS OF STEEL PURLINS
Purlins allow you to safely attach roof and wall cladding sheets to any building. By installing purlins, you create a framework that supports the weight of the metal sheeting and applies this pressure onto the building structure to create a stable and steady building for many years to come.
Installing roof purlins has never been easier. At Dependable steel we supply both C purlins and Z purlins up to 3 MM thicknesses. We can roll grade G450 material as well. we can be manufacture to your precise requirements and to help you successfully install your purlins and safely secure your roofing solutions, we’ll also supply them un-drilled or with pre-drilled horizontal or Vertical holes of various sizes
MEZZANINE FLOORING
As well as being used to support your roof and wall cladding, steel purlins can also be used to support mezzanine floor constructions.
Mezzanine flooring is manufactured from steel using a combination of beams and purlins to create additional space without any major and expensive construction work. Similarly, to your roofing sheets and wall cladding sheets, purlins transfer the loads imposed on the flooring onto the primary beams to provide a safe and structural framework.
During the construction of metal buildings or steel structural buildings, we always use steel purlins! Among the popular c and z steel purling, we may have questions about which one to use. Therefore, regarding this, we will give some brief introduction in the article. Firstly, a purling is a horizontal beam or bar used for structural support in buildings, most commonly in a roof. Several kinds of purling exist. People like to divide them into categories based on their material and shape. The purling most commonly used in roofing is the steel purling. Nowadays, we produce “C” and “Z” (C and Z) shaped channels via c purling roll forming machine and z purling roll forming machine from high-strength zinc-alloy coated steel with minimum yield stress 60% higher than the respective profiles formed through hot forming. This means that we can use sections of minimum thickness and weight, resulting in reduction of the time and the cost of the construction.
And then, people tend to use C and Z steel purling on their steel framed buildings, in order to provide an efficient, lightweight and cost efficient roofing, cladding and walling support system (Purling and girt system). However, there is always a question: Shall I use C steel purling or Z steel purling on my building? Is there any other difference only except for the shapes?
As a result, let’s take a look into the mysteries of the choosing between C and Z steel purlins.
Technical characteristics of C and Z steel Purling:
Dimensions of C and Z Shaped Steel Purling: The “C” and “Z” shaped sections have standard dimensions (Web height:80-300mm; Flange size: 50-80mm; Leg Size:15-30mm). You can have any cutting length from 1.000mm to 20.000mm according to the engineering design data. The designed punching holes are also available with the following restriction:
• Minimum distance from the end section 35mm
• Minimum centre holes distance in perpendicular axe 65mm.
Z Shaped Profiles:
The “Z” shaped sections structural elements feature two flanges of different width! In this way, two elements with the same static height can overlap, fitting perfectly to each other.
As a result, we achieve to bridge multiple spans with continuous Z purling.
C Shaped Profiles:
The “C” shaped sections structural elements feature two equally sized flanges and are ideal for structural support in walls and as floor joists in addition to roofs. Furthermore, we can use C also to form braces, ties or columns in sheds.
Applications of C and Z Shaped Section Channels:
Since the moment of inertia on Z purling weak axis is much bigger than that of C
purling, Z purling works much better from the integrity point of view.
Z steel purling can be overlapped continuously while C steel purling cannot, therefore,it’s better to use Z steel purling instead of c purling on metal buildings with continuous spans.
Z purling are much stronger than C purling due to its continuous or overlapping capability. In this case, for the metal building with bigger roofing loading capacity.
On the roofing of steel framed structures with single spans, and for supporting walls,
it’s better to use C purling because it’s easy to install and calculate. On the can work as supporting for roof, walls and floor etc.For the metal buildings installed with concealed fixing or klip lok roof panels, Z purling can work better than C purling.
